Herod doubled the Temple's
height, and built giant walls
around the mount on which it
stood, the western of which is
todayΓÇÖs Western Wall or Kotel.
Near the present-day Jaffa
Gate, in the upper city, Herod
built a lavish palace which also
served as a citadel. Near the
palace to the north was the up-
per market, or Agora.
